Sprinkler System Design Tips

Basics of Lawn Sprinkler System Design

Sprinkler systems are installed to water landscapes so you don’t have to waste time and energy lugging around a hosepipe. Even though the initial outlay is a big investment, having a sprinkler system design in place will ensure the health of your lawn and garden.

Sprinkler Types

There are 2 types of sprinkler heads, which are rotary and spray nozzles. The former has heads that rotate along a set arc.

The spray nozzle ensures an even distribution in a specific pattern. For example:

  • 90-degree nozzles for corners.

  • 180-degree nozzles for the flat edges of hardscaping.

  • 360-degree nozzles are used in the middle of a lawn.

Both types are available in what is known as a pop-up format, this means they are hidden underground when not in use. When the system is switched on, the water pressure will push the sprinklers up. Pop-ups are ideal for lawns, however, in areas that have taller vegetation a sprinkler system that is mounted on a riser is better, as it sprays water above the vegetation so the spray does not become blocked.

The Controller

These are the brains behind a sprinkler system. It is usually located in a garage or a basement and can be programmed to instruct the sprinklers when to come on and how long to remain on.

The Valves

A wire travels from the controller to valves that will open and close the pipes which deliver the water to the sprinklers. They are located in a plastic box beneath the surface of the soil. Each valve controls a different zone, that can be programmed independently.

Various other components can be attached to these in order to ensure the sprinkler system works smoothly and can include:

  • A sediment filter to prevent the sprinklers from becoming clogged.

  • A back-flow device to ensure the water from the irrigation system does not get siphoned back into the water supply.

  • A device that will reduce the water pressure for drip systems.
